What is PAT Testing?

PAT Testing Stickers
A PAT test (Portable Appliance Test), is a routine check of all electrical appliances within the home or workplace.
Health and safety regulations state that when people work with electrical appliances, the appliance must be safe.
Most types of appliances need regular testing, though how often depends on both the type of appliance and the environment it’s used in.
PAT Testing is for:
- Appliances that are used by employees
- Appliances used in establishments such as schools and hospitals
- Hired or supplied appliances
- Appliances that are repaired or serviced
What Is Involved In PAT Testing?
A PAT Test includes:
- Visual inspection
- Earth bond test
- Insulation resistance test – to ensure the insulation resistance is safe.
- Flash testing – to measure the insulation if a high voltage is applied.
- Load test – checks the current flow when full voltage is applied.
- Earth leakage test – monitors the current flow through the earth lead.
- Functional check – ensures that the appliance is working correctly.
Is It Law To Have Regular PAT Tests?
Contrary to popular belief, it’s not law to have portable appliances tested, however, it is a legal requirement that companies and landlords ensure that all portable appliances are safe and well maintained. The only way to ensure equipment is safe, is to have it PAT tested. Non-compliance can lead to severe punishment which range from fines to imprisonment. Therefore it is recommended that all applicable portable appliances are tested regularly.
